As a language learner myself, learning French and continuallly perfecting my Brazilian Portuguese, I know what it means to start a language learning journey. It can be a daunting first step... but the best stride forward in your life that you will make!
Learning a language requires a multi-pronged approach. There is significant new research to show how students learn to speak a second language faster, as opposed to the grammar-first focused method used in high schools years ago.
Research shows that you need massive input in a variety of novel ways to learn a new language quickly.
We take this research seriously, among other things, we start reading (easy books) in Spanish in the first class, even at the Beginner level.
Secondly, and one that you we consider a game-changer in our classes, is creating an engaging, risk- taking, fun and stress-free learning environment. We focus on communication, not perfection. Students are never forced to speak in class, unless they want to!
Thirdly, we focus on the heart of the language, namely the TOP-TEN most commonly used verbs in Spanish. We stay in this realm, and with these verbs you can communicate almost anything! I tell students to tatoo this list on their arm, but no one has ever taken me up on it.
Grammar, you ask? Lastly, for this article, but not last on the list of the myraid of proven techniques, is that we do "grammar pop-ups". We only go to the grammar pop-up lesson when students are ready for it and have already been doused in the concept naturally, in conversation. This is when the brain is primed to learn grammar.
Your job, is to attend class, our job is to make the most out of our class time, teaching you using the most effective means of learning a second language.
